Wellesley Institute is conducting research on the association between social determinants of health and diabetes among South Asian and Black Populations in Ontario. The research is funded by the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of Health and has received approval from Toronto Metropolitan University Research Ethics Board (REB # 2024-301).

# Background

It is well documented that South Asian and Black populations have high rates of diabetes and related complications. There has been extensive research exploring the biological factors that contribute to this, but there has been less attention to the role of social determinants of health. The first part of our research explored the academic literature to understand the associations between diabetes incidence, prevalence and complications and the social determinants of health in Black and South Asian populations in Ontario. We are now conducting stakeholder consultations with diabetes experts to gather their feedback and identify opportunities to shape policies and programs to improve diabetes care in Ontario.

We are seeking to consult with individuals from across Ontario who work in community health centres, public health, community organizations who worked in diabetes care with Black or South Asian populations (e.g., dietician, diabetes educator, nurse, etc.). We are also interested in consulting with academic or community-based researchers who have conducted research on diabetes and the social determinants of health for Black and South Asian populations.

# Research Activity

Discussions will explore their experiences with the SDOH and diabetes care and if there are any emerging trends that have not yet been captured in the published literature. We will also discuss how to shape SDOH interventions that aim to improve diabetes care for Black and South Asian populations in Ontario.

The focus groups will be conducted virtually through Zoom for the following dates and times. The discussion will last approximately one hour. Participation is entirely voluntary.

  • Wednesday October 30th, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
  • November 27th, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

We hope you will consider participating in the focus groups. If you are unable to participate, please feel free to share this with another person in your network who you think would be valuable for us to meet with.
